STEM Support

There are many challenges to majoring in STEM, and it can be overwhelming. We want to help you succeed, learn as much as you can, and stay connected to BEAM.

BEAM STEM Support starts in your sophomore year, and is only for students majoring in selected STEM fields. This is the area of study we are most familiar with and where our advice is most likely to support students in studying, declaring majors, securing internships, and nailing down post-graduate plans.

When you sign up, you commit to:

  • Staying up to date with BEAM. This includes:

  • Submitting your class schedule at the beginning of each semester.

  • Submitting your transcript at the end of each semester.

  • A meeting once a year with the College Success Coordinator is strongly encouraged.

And in return, BEAM commits to:

  • Providing stipends each semester

  • Advising meetings when you want them

  • Sharing STEM related opportunities such as internships, research, advice

Funding:

Students enrolled in STEM Support receive a stipend within the range of $150-$700 at the start of each semester from BEAM.

  • The lower end of this range is intended to support students who have their full need met already, for example, students with full scholarships, in which this stipend helps to cover costs that arise.

  • The higher end of this range is targeted towards students who are taking out subsidized or unsubsidized loans to cover the cost of tuition, including students attending residential schools

BEAM is able to provide this money thanks to donors and we intend to share the impact of the money with them so we can keep this funding going for future cohorts of students.

To get the stipend you must:

  • Share a recent photo

  • Share information about what the money allowed you to do

  • Share information about how BEAM has supported your adjustment to college

Notes

  • This money is only available two times a year as a maximum. If you are on a trimester calendar, you will get the money once in the fall and once in the early spring, to coincide with a typical semester schedule.

  • You are eligible for this money for up to 8 semesters, which is based on the fact that it takes most individuals between 8 and 10 semesters to graduate college.

  • If you enter college with sophomore status already, you may choose to get up to two semesters of College Start or choose to go straight to the STEM Support funding level. You should choose whichever option is most beneficial to you.

STEM-related reimbursements

BEAM wants to make it easier to take STEM classes, where costs for textbooks, calculators, and lab fees can add up. If you send us your receipts for STEM-related costs we can reimburse you! This money is available to all college students who complete our annual survey.
